Authorities Search For Woman Swept Away In Flood
4 Adults, 1 Toddler Rescued Near North Star Mall

POSTED: 7:36 am CDT August 17, 2007
UPDATED: 12:50 pm CDT August 17, 2007

Authorities continued to search for a missing woman who was feared drowned after she was swept away in floodwaters near North Star Mall early Friday.
Police said that the woman was driving a Hummer when she drove into a creek at Thames and York at midnight.
Four adults and a 20-month-old toddler who were riding in the vehicle were rescued from the top of the vehicle, but the 21-year-old woman was swept away by the rushing water.
Crews searched a square-mile area downstream from the mall early Friday, but the search had to be suspended due to heavy rain and darkness.
Crews resumed their search around 8 a.m. and focused around the Olmos Basin near Highway 281 and Basse Road.
The San Antonio Fire Department, San Antonio Police, cadaver dogs and park police are following the main drainage canal that flows through the basin to Olmos Dam.
Authorities said they will keep Highway 281 and Basse Road near the Quarry Market closed until they find the missing woman.

Search Team Finds Missing Woman's Body!

Luna's SUV Overtaken By Floodwaters

POSTED: 9:22 am CDT August 18, 2007
UPDATED: 9:33 am CDT August 18, 2007

After being missing for almost 17 hours, a body of a young
woman is found by search team Friday in a flooded area near the quarry.
More than 10 agencies were involved in the search, officials said.
Because of  Thursday night's rains, the floodwaters in some drainage areas were up to
20 feet deep and overflowing their banks, but the search ended almost two miles
downstream from the site of the accident, officials said.
"We discovered the body that has been washed away. It was that of a young female
with blonde hair and blue jeans," San Antonio Area fire Chief Ron Rodriguez said.
Police said it was around midnight on Thursday when Evelyn Luna, 22, was swept
away by rushing flood waters.  She was driving a blue Hummer as it went nose first
into a drainage culvert at Thames and Langston near the North Star Mall.
Four others inside the SUV, including a 1-year-old, made it to safety, officials said.
Police said that when Luna opened the driver-side door, she was overtaken by rushing floodwaters.  Hours of searching by air, boats and K-9s produced no sign of the Luna.
Search crews worked throughout the morning and afternoon until 6:25 p.m. Friday.
"(It was) one of our ground crews from the Technical Rescue that discovered the body on the bank," Rodriguez said.

That team was Amy and her German Shepherd "Vachelo von Fenwald"
.
Luna's body was discovered near the drainage culvert at 281 and Basse --
almost two miles away from where the SUV was first submerged.

Senta Saves The Day!

"Senta has become so much a part of our family that
she unhesitatingly placed herself in Harm's Way to
Protect the Family that she Loves so much!"

Our neighborhood  - specifically our block - was being targeted by two young men who
were primarily interested in vandalizing cars parked on the street and in driveways.
It was around 3:00 a.m. that the attempted burglary / breaking and entry took place.
My husband's car was one of the "lucky" ones.  Rather than merely gaining entry to the
vehicle and taking what they wanted, the perpetrators utilized the garage door opener
that was in the car, walked into the garage (and past my car) and began to enter our house.
Clearly their intent was Not Friendly!  They had just finished vandalizing our car in the
driveway, now saw another vehicle inside the garage, yet were not dissuaded about
entering the premises of our home.

Being in a "dead sleep", I was jolted awake when I heard Senta (who sleeps on the floor next
to my side of the bed) emit a low, threatening growl, and then she "took off" like a Streak of
Lightening.  Within seconds, I heard the door from the garage to the house slam shut.  The
burglar had cleary been in my house!  I reached the laundry room at about the same time
as Koda (he must have come in from the back yard via the "doggie door").  Koda immediately
joined Senta who was furiously barking, and Senta remained at Guard..  (If you're
wondering where my husband was when all of this was going on, he was asleep.  It was
not until the dogs started barking in tandem that I heard him say,  " What's going on?")

The moral of our story is that as much as I love my husband of almost 35 years, "when
the chips are down, dogs come through for you".  There is no substitute for the unconditional
love, unwavering devotion, and unsurpassable courage of a well bred German Shepherd Dog!
Thanks Cindy for this marvelous dog!

From Rescue to Romance....

to Release back in the Wild.

On April 28, 2004 as Jackie & I were driving down the country road
returning from our chicken shopping trip for the dogs, we spotted on the
side of the road 2 very tiny baby raccoons approaching the street.  I
immediately turned around.  By the time we returned, the lady in the car
behind us had stopped, gotten out of her car and was trying to guide the
babies back from the road with her foot.  She was clearly afraid of these wild
little creatures.  We stopped, Jackie jumped out, ran up to the raccoons and
scooped them up into her arms.  The look on the ladies face was of shock
and amazement.  After searching the area we realized that the mother was
nowhere to be found.  So naturally, we took the babies home. It was
estimated that the raccoons were approximately only 7-10 days old. And
so it began, round the clock feedings and caring for these 2 little darlings
affectionately named Ruba & Rico.

From the very moment they arrived Zeus the German Shepherd took an
interest in these poor little orphans.  He was always there during the feedings
and before long they were cuddling with him as if he was their mother.

The release actually took 4 months of acclimating them to the outside and
teaching them how to find food and fend for themselves.  Fully vaccinated to
help them be protected from the diseases they could catch in the wild,
the entire process took nearly a year and a half.   Food is still left outside for
them everyday.  They still come back and visit often.

Our hats go off to Jackie, Jamie, and Jessie for raising the babies,
their parents who opened their hearts and their home.
And to Zeus for being the kind of dog that makes us all Proud!

How Many Dogs Does It Take to Change A Light Bulb?"

Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.

Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!

Rottweiler: Make me.

Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!

German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.

Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb!

Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in  the dark.

Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there.....

Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?

Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...

Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

Dear Dogs and Cats

The dishes with the paw print are yours, and contain your food!!
The other dishes are mine and contain my food.
Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food
does not stake a claim
for it becoming your food and dish,
nor do I
find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is NOT
a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object.
Also, tripping me doesn’t help because I fall faster than you can run.

Unfortunately, I cannot buy anything bigger than a king size bed.
I am very sorry about this.
Do not think I will continue sleeping on
 the couch
to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up
in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary
to sleep perpendicular to each
other stretched out
to the fullest extent possible.
I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging
out to other end
to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom.
If by some miracle I beat
you there and manage to get the door shut,
it is not necessary to claw, whine, or meow,
try to turn the knob, or get your
paw under
the edge and then try to pull the door open.
I must exit through the same door I entered.
Also, I have been using the bathroom for years.
Canine and feline attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kiss me, then, and only then
go smell the other dog or cat’s butt.
I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted
the following message on our front door:

Rules for Non-Pet Owners Who Visit
And Like to Complain About Our Pets:

They live here. You don’t.
If you don’t want their hair on your clothes stay off the furniture.

That’s why they call it Furniture

I like my pets a lot better than most people.
To you, it’s an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter
who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn’t speak clearly.

Dogs and cats are better than kids.
They eat less, don’t ask for money,
don't whine all the time,
they are easier to train,
usually come when called, never drive your car,
don’t ever hang out with any
drug-using friends, don’t smoke or drink,
don’t worry about having to get a second job,
buy the latest fashions not off the rack,
don’t wear your clothes, and don’t need
a gazillion dollars for college!!!

And, last but not least...
if they do happen to go out and get pregnant,
you can always sell the children!

You've Come A Long Way ....

The Evolution of the German Shepherd in 30 Generations

Text by Franck Haymann, pictures from a private collection, reprint from Aniwa

All the German Shepherds who are currently bred, represent over 30 generations of dogs registered in a book of origins. Here is the example of a line dating back to 1899 and representing 31 generations of selection.
The very first German Shepherd registered in the book of origins of the SV was called Horand V Grafrath. This dog was the model to write the standard of the breed. He was issued of Karstor (son of Pollux – about whom experts wrote that he’d be better in a zoo than in a field herding the stock - and of Schäfermädchen von Hanau) and of Lene Sparwasser (Grieffe Spawasser x Lotte Sparwasser). On his file established by the SV, one could read that he was born on January 1, 1895. We could have chosen other examples than the ones below, especially from Odin V Tannenmeise via Jeck Von Noricum, but our idea was simple: to show, thanks to pictures, over a century of carefully monitored selection, representing 30 generations of breeding an selection, i.e. over 2,100,000 dogs registered in the German Zuchtbuch.
We began with a young dog whose performance was particularly noticed at the 2002 Championship, V13 Doug Von Noort (31st generation F31), whose line can be traced back directly to the first German Shepherd in the SV Zuchtbuch, Horand V Grafath.
F31 Doug Von Noort, the best son of Mack V Aducht, classed V13 at the 2002 Championship while he was still young. Indeed, he was born on march 3, 2000 at Edzard Müller.
Son of F30, Mack Von Aducht, SZ N° SZ 1995026, born on April 21, 1997 at Mr Messler’s and considered as one of the best sons of Rikkor V Bad Boll, although he was issued of one of the very first litters of the double champion. He was Auslese three years in a row, VA3 in 2000, VA3 in 2001 and VA4 in 2002, in front of another son of Rikkor, Kevin V Murtal, VA5.
Son of F29, Rikkor V Bad Boll, VA1 in 1998 and 1999. He is a son of Ulk V Arlett, born in 1994. In previous years, he had made it to SG1 in 1996, and VA7 in 1997. Rikkor, SZ n°1919865, not only dominated the show rings, he also produced excellent progeny groups.
Son of F28, Ulk Von Arlett, SZ N°1769704, was born on January 28, 1990. He was awarded the VA1 in 1995. He was the most used stud in the past 10 years. This son of Yago was one of the greatest dogs of the decade.
Son of F27, Yago Vom Wildsteiger Land, VA 1 SZ N°1702119, was the direct descendent of Uran, through Eiko, born in 1987.
Son of F26, Eiko V Kirschental, born on December 26, 1983 at the Fuller’s family, SZ N°1607402. SchH3/FH Kkl 1 HD-normal. Here is summary of his list of achievements: BSZS 1985 (JHKLR) SG 1, BSZS 1986 (GHKLR) VA 3, BSZS 1988 (GHKLR) VA 1 Sieger, BSZS 1989 (GHKLR) VA 3.
Son of F25, VA 1 Uran Vom Wildsteiger Land, SZ N°1526684, born on March 12, 1981 at Martin Gobbl’s. He became a legend in the world of the German Shepherd, and left an imperishable mark in the selection of the breed.
Son of F24, IRK v ARMINIUS, SchH3 FH IP3, SZ N°1437161, born on September 1978.
A son of F23, PIROL v ARMINIUS, SchH3, SZ N°1381397, un born in 1976at the Hermann Martin’s, a former president of the SV.
Son of F22, Cliff v Haus Beck, SchH2 , SZ N°1224789.
Son of F21, QUANTO vd WIENERAU, SchH2 V-A, SZ N°1381397. One of the four tenors of contemporary breeding, along with Mutz, Canto and Marco. Born in 1967, Quanto’s line is unavoidable nowadays, with some of the most representative lines among his descendents, such as that of Lasso Di Val Sole (Odin V Tannenmeise), Reza Von Haus Beck, Reza Von Der Wienerau, Dick Vadeloga (Sieger in 1973).
Son of F20, Condor v Zollgrenzschutz-Haus, born on October 20, 1962, SZ N° 1038960.
Son of F19, Condor V Schnapp, SZ N° SZ 959488.
Son of F18, Condor V Hohenstamm, Sieger 1958, SZ N°892021, he was considered an excellent stud in Germany. He left many descendents, among whom was the Sieger 1962, Mutz a.d.Kuckstrass.
Son of F17, Arko V Delog, SZ N° SZ 820237, an excellent, which however didn’t have the same qualities as other sons of Rolf, such as VA Hardt vom Stubeschacht, VA Brando vom Tappenort, VA Regina von Colonia Agrippina ou VA Bursche vom Pfingsthugel).
Son of F16, Rolf V Onasbrucker Land, VA 1950/51, SZ N°640721, born on January 1947 at Herr Dettmer’s. He became the most significant stud after WWII. He left many major lines, especially that of his son’s, Alf V Waldort-Emst, which can be traced up to 4 generations with Canto Von Der Wienerau.
Son of F15, Lex Preußenblut, SchH III Kkl 1, SZ N°589285, (a determining dog for German breeding, which became the most influent stud between 1944 and 1946, but left for the United States for 10,000 dollars, a considerable amount at the time.)
Son of F14, V Trutz a.d.Schwanenstadt, SchH III MH1, SZ N°518353, which was the most influent stud of V Preussenblut kennel.
Son of F13, Ingo V Piastendamm, born on 1934, SZ N°483163, a dog in which one can clearly see the influences of the bitch Vicki Von Bern, a great daughter of Klodo x Utz, which was unavoidable at that time.
Son of F12, V Gockel v. Bern, SchH Kkl 1, born In 1932), SZ N°439350.
Son of F11 V Wiegand v. Blaisenberg, SZ N° ???
Son of F10 VA Baron v.d. Deutschen Werken, SZ N°382838.
Son of F9 VA Utz v. Haus Schutting, SchH 3, SZ N°331999, Sieger 1929, was very different from those “leggy” dogs thanks to his excellent bone structure, which he transmitted to his descendents. Like many major dogs, like his father and his grandfather on his father’s side, he left his ntaive country for the United States. Just like his father, he became a prominent stud over there, and was very important to help fight against the excessive size of the dogs. Unfortunately, his fame caused the breeders to over-use him, thus causing the multiplication of some defaults.
Son of F8, Ch Klodo V Boxberg, SZ N°135239 (born on August 20, 1921). He was exported to the USA a short while after winning the German Championship. Quite curiously, his small size penalized him in the USA, where he missed the title of Grand Victor simply because he was a few centimetres to short. Still, he left over 600 descendents in Germany, but his American career was not as glorious.
Son of F7, Ch Erich V Grafenwerth, SZ N°71141, born on July 28, 1918, world champion in 1920. He was exported to the USA the year after. Before being sold to the American breeder Hamilton, he produced the most influent and symbolical dog of the late 20’s, Klodo. However, Erich showed a weakness in his behaviour during a test of character at the SV Championship. Besides Klodo, he left many great descendents in several kennels.
Son of F6, Alex v Westfalenheim, SchH3 Kkl 1. this dog was known to produce many white descendents. He was the most representative descendent of his father.
Son of F5, Hettel Uckermark, SZ N°3897, born on July 1907 at Mrs Poppe (Wiesbaden). This herding dog became one of the pillars of the German breeding. He became Sieger in 1909. This picture of Hettel is the only one we have of him (there’s no sign of any other picture of him, herding or in a ring.)
Son of F4, Roland v Starkenburg, born on November 1, 1903 at Herr Spielmann’s, SZ N°1537, Sieger 1906 and 1907. He is the father of many greatly influent dogs, such as Hettel V Uckermark or Herta V Kriminalpolizei. He was considered as a model in the 1900’s. He won the Sieger in 1906 in Austria, and was even used by Stephanitz himself with many bitches of the Van Grafrath kennel. He left almost 1,000 descendents in the SV book of origins.
Son of F3, Heinz V Starkenburg. This dog was not entered in the book of origins. His mother was a daughter of Pollux, who was omnipresent in the ascendancy of the first German Shepherds.
Son of F2, V Schwaben, (born on January 5, 1898 chez Herr Drieger), SZ N°13. He was the father of several important dogs, such as Beowulf Ruede and Pilot Ruede, as well as the Sieger 1903 Roland Vom Park, born at Karl Resiter’s.
Son of F1, Horand V Grafrath, SZ N°1, a dog bought by the founder of the SV in 1898, the Captain Stephanitz.

Rescue Dog gets successor after Illinois Breeder Donates pup

By Sheila McLaughlin
The Cincinnati Enquirer

When Tatra went into labor on the day of the World Trade Center attack, Cindy Hiemenz knew there was a purpose to this litter of eight male German shepherds.

The way the Illinois breeder tells it, fate pointed her to Mike Owens and his search-and-rescue dog, Worf, in Monroe.

Mr. Owens, president of Southwestern Ohio K-9 Search and Rescue Team, was forced to retire Worf, his most experienced canine, last month after the 12-year-old German shepherd became traumatized during their recent search mission at the World Trade Center.

Ms. Hiemenz, owner of Von Fenwald Kennels in Wonder Lake, Ill., about 65 miles northwest of Chicago, said she was moved by an article about the pair that ran in the Enquirer.

After tracking Mr. Owens down, she offered to donate the pick of Tatra's litter to succeed Worf.

“When that whole thing hit,” Ms. Hiemenz said, “I was devastated like everybody was. I kept thinking, "What can I do to give back and help our country?'

“I thought it was a sign,” she said of the birth of Tatra's litter about 18 hours after the terrorist attacks.

Ms. Hiemenz said she was touched that Mr. Owens took Worf to New York despite the dog's age.

“There was no question in Mike's mind that his most seasoned dog had to go,” she said, calling Mr. Owens' efforts heroic.

Mr. Owens will pick up the champion-line pup in about five weeks and begin training it for search and rescue.

“I didn't expect such generosity,” he said. “We were honored she would think of us to replace Worf.”

The pup — whose grandfather Lasso vom Neuen Berg was named world champion in 1998 — is worth more than $2,500, Ms. Hiemenz said.

As for Worf, Mr. Owens said he continues to recover. The canine lay down and refused to work the first day at the site after helping find the body of a firefighter.

“He's coming around. He still has some edginess to him, but he's picked his eating back up,” Mr. Owens said.

He said he had reservations about taking Worf because of his age.

“But when something like that happens, you pull out all the stops,” Mr. Owens said. “He did his job and he retired on his own terms.”
